SCALING & ROOT PLANING

When caught early enough, gum disease can often be effectively treated using a special kind of dental cleaning called scaling and root planing. First, we’ll thoroughly remove any plaque and tartar buildup from around the gum line (scaling), and then we’ll gently reshape and smooth out the roots of the teeth (root planing). This will make plaque and bacteria less likely to gather around the gums in the future, protecting a patient from reinfection.

ANTIBIOTIC THERAPY

After a thorough periodontal cleaning, our team may choose to apply a topical antibiotic in order to eliminate any bacteria still hidden deep below the gum line. On the gums, this antibiotic will quickly dry and then slowly dissolve over the next few days, enabling the powerful medicine to reach and kill any leftover bacteria. After it has run its course, we’ll recommend that a patient come in to see us for routine dental cleanings every three to four months to ensure that the infection doesn’t come back.
